Tackling Common Struggles When Writing An Essay

It's not just you!

Every student has days in their academic career when they simply cannot start (or keep) working on an essay. Don't be discouraged. There are a few struggles that students frequently encounter when composing their essays. We have a list of some of the most common hurdles that stand in the way of getting your work done. And of course, some suggestions for how you can overcome them.

Essay Writing Hurdles And How To Overcome Them

  • Choosing A Topic

In many cases, your instructor will expect you to come up with an essay topic on your own. Find something that you enjoy researching, and is relevant to the direction that you want your studies to take in the future. If you have been assigned a subject, try to find a way to approach the topic that is original, but still stays within the boundaries of your supervisor's instructions. If you have any doubt as to the topic that you have selected, consult with your adviser before you start work!

  • Making A Start

Sometimes just getting the first few words or ideas out can be the most difficult part of the essay writing process. It may help to jot down ideas or thoughts that you have in a notebook. Don't feel that you have to write the perfect introduction the first time you sit down to work. However it is better to start getting something written, as opposed to leaving the page blank.

Always get an early start on your assignments. That way, if you have writer's block, or trouble getting going, you will have enough time to recover. Procrastinating often means more stress down the road as you struggle to do more writing than time allows.

  • Formulating A Terrific Thesis

Take the time to nail down a really great thesis. This is absolutely critical. If you start out with a wishy-washy statement that lacks precision and direction, the rest of your paper is doomed to fail. Remember, your thesis is of particular importance if your paper is an argumentative, scientific or cause and effect essay. You must take a stand, make a claim or have a position that you will then seek to defend.

  • Create An Outline

Your outline can be considered the road map that you will use to lead your readers throughout your essay. Creating a clear and concise outline will save you time and hassle. You will have a plan that is well-prepared and easy to follow. Now all that is left to do is write!
